ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER

- Master’s Degree in Social Work
- Approval for School Social Work
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Special Education Building Principal
SUPERVISES: None
JOB GOAL: To identify problems and situations interfering with the ability of students to benefit from the educational experience and to provide a problem-solving service to the impacted children and their families.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinates or serves as a member of diagnostic teams and Individual Educational Planning committees.
- Provides to the multi-disciplinary evaluation team comprehensive, diagnostic evaluations of children suspected of disability per MARSE requirements.
- Serves as liaison between the school, the home and the community in building and maintaining positive relationships.
- Coordinates and develops resources within and outside the school system for use by children, their families, and school personnel.
- Collaborates with principals, teachers and other school personnel to improve use of existing school programs and procedures; plans and implements new programs and procedures related to the educational, social, and emotional needs of the children.
- Serves as consultant to resource and categorical classroom programs personnel. Provides short term support therapy and intervention services for children identified per MARSE rules and as required per their Individual Education Plans.
- Participates with school staff in altering situations adversely affecting the personal, social-emotional, and academic development of children.
- Possess knowledge of the following:
- Individual, family, group and community dynamics, as well as mental health concepts and behavior which results from mental, physical, sensory, emotional, speech or any other handicapping conditions.
- Educational organization, delivery systems, and the school as a social institution.
- Varying life styles and their influences and counter-influence on learning and school/community relations.
- The learning process as it relates to the developmental stages of learning patterns, including actual and potential impediments of learning.
- The legislative process and impact of law on education.
- Structure, function and policy of major human service organizations.
- Value and ethical constraints within which the social work profession operates.
- Research, evaluation, tests and measurements.
- Possess the following skills and abilities:
- Ability to recognize deficits in learning patterns, to identify and assess social-emotional needs of students, and to develop plans with school personnel for alternative learning experiences.
- Skills in systematic observation and assessment of individual or groups of students in problem situations, and ability to formulate appropriate plans of action.
- Skills in the collection of information and documentation of biological, psychological, sociological, and environmental factors affecting the learning process.
- Skills in identifying and developing resources within and out-side a school system.
- Skills in identifying resources within and outside the school system, and ability to provide appropriate direct or indirect services to individuals, groups, families, and the direct school community.
- Ability to share social work knowledge and skills with team members and professionals, parents, students, and others in the areas of mental health, human behavior, and child management.
- Ability to communicate to appropriate persons, such as the school superintendent, principal, supervisor, and the educational planning and placement committee, regarding socio-developmental findings, goals and objectives and intervention strategies, as well as outcomes and recommendations.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.
